Wodonga Creek Raw Water Pump Station Upgrade

Client

South East Water

Location

Wodonga, Vic

Spiire’s Surveying and Water Engineering teams were engaged by North East Water to provide site assessment and detailed design services for the Wodonga Creek Raw Water Pump Station (WCRWPS) upgrade project. Located on Bandiana Link Road, the WCRWPS is a key essential infrastructure asset which currently services a population in excess of 40,000 local residents. The facility currently extracts water from the Wodonga Creek and transfers it via a series of pumps and two rising mains to the Wodonga Water Treatment Plant (WTP) some 4 km to the south east.

With some of the plant now nearly 100 years old, Spiire were commissioned to undertake a full systems review and development of a preliminary (functional) design for the future upgrade of the plant. The upgrade work will include decommissioning and modification of existing structures along with supply, installation and commissioning of a new pump well and associated mechanical, electrical and automation systems.

Our scope of works included a detailed assessment of the existing assets and preliminary design of the necessary upgrade works to provide a guaranteed raw water supply of 1000 L/s is available to the WTP, with full mechanical and electrical redundancy provided at the facility. The upgrade also included a proposed emergency power supply in the form of a diesel powered generator.

Our challenges included an absence of existing data for the site. As such, we were required to undertake significant forensic testing and verification to establish the key operational parameters at the site including a detailed review of underground assets.  We also undertook a detailed review of the river offtake structure which included inspection of inlet pipes and storage wells performed by commercial divers.

Dean Jones Project Engineer at North East Water said, “The project went very well and there was a strong emphasis on program compliance. Spiire was happy to go the extra yards in detail and the report and cost estimate provided was very detailed”
