Spiire’s Landscape Architecture team was engaged by Land Australia (a subsidiary of Hickinbotham Homes) to deliver the highly anticipated ‘Harvest Green’ playground and community hub at the heart of Roseworthy Estate in Adelaide’s north, as part of a broader scope of works.

Reflecting the rich agricultural and wine history of the Roseworthy area, the park design embraces the theme of an “Enchanted Orchard”. Soaring play towers featuring perforated botanical shapes with climbing access to slides within the structures reflect the silos of many farms and agricultural towns. These custom designed hero features are complemented by a further 18 pieces of play equipment including a double flying fox, hilltop slide, trampolines (inground), scramble nets, multiple climbing / play structures, large log scramble and oversized wine barrel.

The playground zone encompassing both senior and junior play spaces sit alongside a kickabout space and sports court, nature play, shelter and seating areas – all connected by a hierarchy of paths and knit together with references to the site’s agricultural history and botanical theme.

Planting was a major consideration of the park and playground design, which maximises tree canopy to provide natural shade. With 168 trees, and over 5,600 shrubs, grasses and groundcovers planted, and 80% of the species being local to South Australia, the asset provides the dual benefit of increasing biodiversity to the area and providing opportunities for children to engage with local flora, birds and insects.

A master planned central reserve, concepts for the design evolved over a 3-year period. Our design team worked closely with our clients from initial visioning and theming workshops to ensure broader client marketing and community planning requirements were incorporated.

Inclusivity was at the forefront of design, with activities available for all ages and abilities, along with facilities to cater for young families and the elderly. The team worked with local suppliers to ensure the design caters for a range of risk levels, offering meaningful, engaging and challenging play for all children.
