Associate Civil Engineer, Harrison Spurling, began his career with Spiire as a graduate in 2014 at the age of 27. ‘From day one, Spiire provided me with the opportunities I needed to really step up and deliver on projects,’ says Harrison. Under the mentorship of Principal Civil Engineers John Koehler, John Prentice and David Cameron, Harrison progressed from a Graduate through to Associate Engineer in his first five years at Spiire. Currently working on the 1400-lot Newhaven Estate in Tarneit for PEET as Design Lead, Harrison also line manages several other engineers in the design team.

‘I was initially given the opportunity to model the whole Newhaven site upfront, to establish and confirm the drainage and servicing strategies (which I also set up), as well as assessing the major drainage components across site’. Harrison went on to undertake the detailed design for Stages 1 through to 8 before taking on the Design Lead role four years ago.

‘The best part of the job is the diversity of projects and clients I get to work with at any one time; designing significant water assets for Yarra Valley Water, complex town centres (such as the Aurora Town Centre for Places Vic) and often providing Expert Advice for compensation claims for clients’.

‘It is also incredibly unique and advantageous to be part of an integrated team – all of our disciplines under the one roof. You have the opportunity to learn from other disciplines within our industry and have the benefit of cross-discipline knowledge and understanding’.

Through his work at Spiire, Harrison has also spent four years on the industry’s YEiLD Committee, two as the Committee’s Chairperson. ‘Spiire has an environment and leadership that encourages and provides support for these sorts of opportunities for individual industry connections,’ says Harrison.

Recently moving back home to Geelong, Harrison continues to have the opportunity to work on both local and larger Melbourne-based projects from his home base in the Geelong office. In addition to property sector projects he is also working on some significant new projects in the education and health sectors across Geelong and South-West Victoria.

Also starting her career at Spiire as a Graduate in 2013, Associate Engineer Angela Durston-Ryan has experienced a variety of opportunities through working in Spiire’s Melbourne and Albury offices, and most recently in Spiire’s Shepparton office. ‘It’s been relatively easy to access the right opportunities to help me advance my career in a certain direction,’ says Angela.

‘I’ve worked alongside very senior solutions-focussed mentors who have taught me to apply my  negotiating, interpersonal and technical skills to deliver exceptional outcomes for clients and projects.’

Angela was invited to join Spiire’s ‘Inspiring Leaders Program’ as a graduate employee to support her progression to a leader within the business. ‘Now I am really enjoying guiding the development of younger engineers within the business and sharing my key learnings and technical knowledge to help empower others’.

‘I think what I most like about working at Spiire is that leaders in this business, from Business Unit Managers to the directors, are all accessible – you can pick their brain (and I regularly do)… there are no special offices for anyone. Everyone is on the same level and everyone is treated the same and given the same opportunities’.

Currently Project Managing the 2350-lot Botanical Estate subdivision in Mickleham from her home base in Shepparton, Angela has led the completion for the first 650 lots to date while also working on a variety of local Shepparton based projects. Angela has also recently been shortlisted for the Young Professional of the Year at the 2021 UDIA Awards for Excellence.

General Manager for Northern Victoria, Cameron Clarke, began his career at Spiire as a Senior Professional Designer/Project Manager in Spiire’s Melbourne office in 2007. He was given the opportunity to move home to Bendigo and head up the establishment of Spiire’s Bendigo office in 2010, where he progressed to Principal.

‘Starting my career in Melbourne, I never thought that I would get the opportunity to move back home to Bendigo and progress my career to the extent I have’ says Cameron. ‘Spiire’s ‘One Team’ core value is really just that, and it has afforded me, and many others, the opportunity to deliver a wide variety of projects from all across our regional and metropolitan geographies, that I would never have otherwise had the opportunity to be involved with’.

If you grab them with both hands you will always be recognised for your contributions’.
