Woodlea precinct 1 wetland approved

Woodlea Estate has received approval by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) for precinct 1 wetland located in close proximity to the Deanside Wetlands in Rockbank, which is home to Melbourne’s Growling Grass Frog (GGF) habitat.

Once abundant in Victoria, the GGF population has dwindled significantly since the 1980s making it one of the state’s most endangered frogs. Loss and fragmentation of suitable habitat have been found to be the main threat to the species.

A consultation process was undertaken by Spiire, DELWP, Melbourne Water and Melton City Council to understand the impact the proposed wetland would have on the conservation area. Through investigation, DELWP determined that there would be no net loss of GGF habitat.

DELWP is currently exploring the concept of incorporating a GGF breeding pool within the stormwater treatment assets in key GGF conservation areas.
